HEAT RELATED ILLNESSES SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENTS



Too much heat is not safe for anyone, especially the Senior Citizens. It is important to be cautious and get help immediately when you are overheated . Types of Heat related illnesses are ; Heat syncope is a sudden dizziness that can happen when you are active in hot weather especially if you take certain medications . Heat cramps- are the painful tightening or muscle spasms in your stomach, arms, or legs. Heat edema- swelling in your ankles or feet when you get too hot. Heat rash- is a skin condition from heavy sweating . Heat exhaustion- is a warning that your body can no longer keep you cool . Heat stroke- is a medical emergency in which the body temperature > 104 . Symptoms include but not limited to : fainting, no sweating, confusion, acting strangely , fast , weak or weak pulse. Tips to stay safe includes: drink plenty of liquids, such as water, fruit or vegetable juices , gatorade, powerade , pedialyte. Avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages ( check with your doctor if you are on limited fluid intake ) Dress in light colored loose fitting light weight clothing. Avoid outdoor activities between the hours of 11-4 . Use sunscreen of SPF 15 or greater . Repeat as often as necessary .
